Speediance vs Tonal: Cost, Controls, Workouts and Ownership

My choice is Speediance because it fits how I train and what I want to own after the purchase. Tonal still deserves credit for an excellent lifting experience. The useful comparison is the whole ownership experience: the machine, its controls, the workouts you actually repeat, membership, and what happens when something needs service.

This guide combines my previously separate price, membership, workout-programming and remote-control comparisons. My hands-on Tonal experience is with the original Tonal, not a tested Tonal 2. Model specifications and offers change; compare the exact products in your cart.

Start with the machines I actually used

I have trained extensively on the original Tonal and on Speediance machines. Those sessions matter more to my recommendation than a spec-sheet comparison. They also have limits: experience with an original Tonal cannot establish how a Tonal 2 behaves, and one Gym Monster generation cannot stand in for every later model.

For the original Tonal and Gym Monster 2 comparison, the advertised total resistance figures were 200 lb and 220 lb respectively. The Gym Monster 2S is a separate model. Do not confuse a 2S test with a Gym Monster 2 specification, and do not treat a displayed 1RM estimate as a machine’s physical resistance capacity.

Tonal’s wall-mounted installation can suit a dedicated training space. Speediance’s freestanding design and folding platform suit my preference for a machine I can position without committing a wall to it. Both still need room to exercise safely; a compact storage footprint does not describe the space needed for a bench, bar or extended cables.

Compare the full cost, not a headline price

The earlier posts used several prices from different moments in my ownership. Combining those into a single supposedly current price would be misleading. Build a fresh comparison from the delivered hardware quote, the accessory bundle you need, required membership, and any known installation or relocation charges.

For example, a membership priced at $60 per month would add $2,880 over 48 months. That is an illustration of recurring cost, not a quote for today’s plan. Taxes, financing and changing prices can alter the total. Use the same time period for both machines and count each included accessory only once.

My earlier two-Speediances comparison was a way of exposing that long-term cost difference. It was not a recommendation that everyone needs two machines. A second device only adds value if the space, household use and budget justify it. For most buyers, one machine they use regularly is the better starting point.

Re-create your actual workout

My Arnold Blueprint experience is a useful test case because it involved varied rep targets and changing weights. A machine can have polished guided classes and still make a familiar custom routine frustrating to enter or repeat. Check exercise availability, set editing, warm-ups, rest periods and how the next session’s weight is chosen.

My preference for Speediance comes from this practical fit, rather than the word “AI” on a product page. I want useful progression and control over my workout. Someone who values Tonal’s guided experience more highly may make a different choice.

Tonal Clicker versus Speedy Ring: a control detail that matters

The remote-control comparison belongs inside the ownership decision. In my earlier comparison, the Tonal Clicker’s tactile button shape made its position easier to locate by touch. The Speedy Ring’s movable mounting position was useful when changing grip or bar setup. Those are ergonomic observations, not proof that one accessory is universally better or compatible with the other system.

Before buying an accessory, verify the exact remote, bar and hardware generation it supports. With a light load, check whether you can find the button without changing your grip, whether the mount slides unintentionally, and whether engagement and disengagement behave as expected. A comfortable attachment does not replace the machine’s safety instructions.

Membership and support are part of the product

My largest reservations about Tonal concern ownership after the sale: membership changes, the experience after cancellation, and support for small but important components. I explain those incidents in the long-term Tonal ownership review. They are my historical experiences, not a claim that every owner receives the same treatment.

Ask both vendors what remains usable without a subscription, which accessories are replaceable, and how service works outside warranty. Save the policy and the quote you relied on. A capable lifting machine can still be the wrong purchase if its ongoing costs and service conditions do not fit your expectations.

Who I would point toward each option

I would start with Speediance for someone who wants a freestanding smart gym and shares my priorities around custom training and ownership cost. I would consider Tonal for someone who wants its training experience, can accommodate installation, and accepts the full membership and service commitment after checking current terms.

My recommendation is based on use, not a promise about every future software release. Buy the current machine for the workouts and features you can verify today. For the distinctions within Speediance’s range, continue to the Gym Monster model comparison.
