The Submission That Could Have Ended Everything
A near-miss with a neck submission in BJJ revealed a terrifying reality: sometimes the risk isn't the technique itself, but what happens when your opponent's weight comes down on the wrong part of your body at the wrong moment.
In Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, we talk a lot about submissions-the chokes, the armbars, the leg locks. We study the mechanics, the angles, the grip fighting. But there's a darker side to submission defense that doesn't get discussed enough: the moments where the danger isn't just about tapping out, it's about something far worse happening.
The Weight Problem
I've been thinking a lot about this lately, and I'll be direct: I take risks in my jiu-jitsu. I go for submissions that put me in vulnerable positions, and I accept that sometimes those positions could end very badly for me.
Here's the thing about certain submissions-specifically the ones where you put your whole body weight onto your neck. When you're trying to hit that oma plata or that guillotine, you're essentially trusting that your opponent is going to react the right way. You're trusting that when they feel the submission coming on, they'll tap or they'll respond in a manner that doesn't involve dropping their full weight down and forward onto your cervical spine.
That's a big trust to place in someone you might not know that well.
The White Belt Incident
I actually had to deal with this exact scenario at white belt. Someone decided they were going to drop all their weight down on me, and I realized what was happening with enough time to do something about it-thankfully.
What did I do? I shot my head underneath their legs. I literally swam my head under their legs to avoid getting my spine busted in half, to avoid getting my neck shattered. It wasn't a technical escape. It was a desperate survival move because I could feel that weight coming down and I knew I didn't have time to wait for them to figure it out.
But here's what scares me: that was a white belt. Someone slow, someone who hadn't developed the reflexes or the control that comes with higher training. I had time to react because they were slow.
The Speed Problem
I can't imagine that same scenario with someone at brown belt, black belt, or even upper purple belt. Those guys are fast. They don't give you time to think. They don't give you time to react.
When someone of that skill level feels a submission coming on and decides they're going to power through it-to drop their weight down and try to escape-that's when things can go really wrong, really fast.
That's the reality of training jiu-jitsu at a high level. The risk isn't always about whether you can tap in time. Sometimes the risk is about what happens in that split second before either person knows what's going on.
The Risk I'm Willing to Take
So why do I still go for these submissions? Why do I still put myself in these positions?
Because I love jiu-jitsu. Because those submissions work, and I'd rather hit them and accept the risk than play it safe and never go for anything.
But I won't pretend it's not dangerous. I won't pretend there's no chance something catastrophic could happen. That's the truth they don't tell you in BJJ class when you're learning these techniques. They teach you the mechanics. They don't always teach you about the moments where everything could go wrong in a way that has nothing to do with whether you tapped or not.
What I've Learned
Here's what I try to do now: be selective about when I take these risks. Know who I'm training with. Pay attention to their skill level, their temperament, and their control.
Because at the end of the day, jiu-jitsu is a combat sport. You're dealing with another person's body, another person's weight, another person's reflexes. You can control your own technique, but you can't always control what they do in response.
The submission that could have ended everything? It didn't end everything for me. But it opened my eyes to the fact that sometimes the line between a great roll and a life-changing injury is measured in milliseconds-and that's not something you can always control with technique alone.
Train smart. Know your training partners. And respect the danger, even when you're going for the win.
